Aviation Week Magazine has awarded Honeywell a Program Excellence Award for the Power Thermal Management System (PTMS) on the Lockheed Martin F-35 joint strike fighter.
Aviation Week’s Program Excellence Award recognizes and promotes program execution excellence in terms of performance, leadership capability, and outstanding lessons learned. The criteria are based on the best elements of program/project leadership excellence developed by the Strategic Project Leadership Program of the Technological Leadership Institute, the NIST Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Awards, and the NASA/USRA Center for Program/Project Management Research.
The F-35 PTMS integrates functions of auxiliary power, environmental controls, and emergency power into a single system. This integration technology, which is a dramatic contrast to conventional systems, reduces aircraft weight and length while significantly increasing reliability.
Lockheed Martin selected Honeywell for the F-35 on-board systems in 1999. The F-35 is set to enter operational service in 2012. There are more than 3,100 aircraft planned for production through 2034, with an estimated service life of over 50 years.
