Honeywell and Whirlpool Corporation have announced that Whirlpool will begin using Honeywell’s Solstice™ Liquid Blowing Agent (LBA), the most environmentally responsible agent available in the U.S., in insulation for Whirlpool refrigerators made in the U.S. This announcement follows on the heels of the news that Honeywell’s Solstice LBA received final approval from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Honeywell Solstice LBA is a new blowing agent with a lower global warming potential. The new blowing agent has a 100-year global warming potential less than 5, a 99 percent improvement over the most common manufacturing solution in the U.S. today. A near drop-in replacement, it also offers cost benefits and is non-flammable, providing safety advantages over other hydrocarbon blowing agents. Blowing agents allow energy-efficient insulating foam to expand and helps provide many of the foam’s key performance characteristics.
“No other material identified or discovered to date offers the comprehensive range of advantages – from energy efficient performance and ultra low-global-warming-potential to cost-effectiveness and safety – than this new product offering does,” said Sanjeev Rastogi, business director, structural enclosures for Honeywell Fluorine Products.
Honeywell’s technology will be included in future product lineups from brands such as Whirlpool Brand, Maytag®, Amana®, Jenn-Air® and KitchenAid®.
