Honeywell and the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced the 2012 Spring tour of their award-winning, hip-hop science education program FMA Live!

Created by Honeywell and NASA in 2004, FMA Live! is designed to excite middle school students about science and math by teaching Sir Isaac Newton’s Three Laws of Motion in an innovative, entertaining, and memorable way. Named for his second law of motion (Force = Mass x Acceleration), FMA Live! uses professional actors, original songs, music videos, and interactive science demonstrations to teach Newton’s three laws of motion and universal law of gravity.

FMA Live! is the only nationally touring, multi-media, science education production of its kind. It will reach more than 16,000 students during its 10-week, 20-city tour of the United States. The program, which is completely underwritten by Honeywell, has already traveled 92,700 miles, covering 48 U.S. states and Canada and reaching 297,300 students at 844 schools.

For more information on the program and its tour stops, read the press release.

Honeywell has awarded scholarships to 254 students from 30 countries and 30 U.S. states and territories to attend the Honeywell Leadership Challenge Academy (HLCA). This unique, week-long leadership and science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) program will run twice from February 26 to March 9 at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL.

HLCA provides children of Honeywell employees with the opportunity to develop their leadership skills through technology- and science-oriented workshops, lectures, and team exercises that include simulated astronaut training that brings these studies to life. Developed in partnership with the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, the program is designed to encourage high school students to pursue STEM-related careers.

Since 2010, Honeywell and the U.S. Space & Rocket Center have awarded more than 630 scholarships to students after rigorous application and review processes based on their academic achievement and community involvement. All junior and senior level high school children of full-time Honeywell employees are eligible to apply. Financial contributions from Honeywell employees help fund the scholarships, which include tuition for the week-long program, meals, accommodations, and program materials.

For more than 10 years, Honeywell has sponsored the annual Fiesta Bowl Aerospace Challenge, which invites teams of students from fifth through eighth grade from across Arizona to design an international lunar station. This past year’s event featured more than 70 Honeywell engineers, including Aerospace Vice President of Advanced Technology Bob Witwer, who judged more than 200 entries at Arizona State University. Six finalists then presented to Honeywell judges and astronauts at the Arizona Challenger Space Center.

The winning team and teacher from SS. Simon and Jude School in Phoenix, along with Honeywell leaders, were recognized on the field in front of nearly 70,000 fans at the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Arizona. The winning team also received a trip to the Johnson Space Center in Houston.

The Fiesta Bowl Aerospace Challenge is part of Honeywell Hometown Solutions, the company’s corporate citizenship initiative, which focuses on five issues of vital importance: Family Safety & Security; Housing & Shelter; Science & Math Education; Habitat & Conservation; and Humanitarian Relief. Together with leading public and non-profit institutions, Honeywell has developed powerful programs to address these needs in the communities it serves.

Honeywell Hometown Solutions (HHS), the company’s corporate citizenship initiative, recently unveiled the Honeywell Initiative for Science & Engineering (HISE), a new global science education program aimed to inspire future scientists and engineers.

The program which launched its first events at Beihang University (BUAA) in Beijing, China and CETYS Universidad in Mexicali, Mexico aims to bridge the gap between formal academic study and practical business applications by providing students with direct access to Honeywell technology leaders and Nobel Laureates in physics and chemistry. The program also provides paid internship opportunities to outstanding students.

At the event at CETYS Universidad, more than 1,400 guests, including 800 students, heard from Dr. John Lewis Hall, the 2005 Nobel Prize winner in physics. And in Beijing, a renowned researcher in atomic and molecular physics and 1997 Nobel laureate, Professor Claude Cohen-Tannoudji, delivered a lecture on Laser Manipulation of Atoms that underlined the importance of fundamental scientific research.

Dr. Hall and Professor Cohen-Tannoudji also spoke to students about the impact their careers in science, technology, engineering, and math can make on communities and global corporations. Along with the university students, guests included teachers, government and business representatives, and Honeywell employees from the Mexicali and Beijing regions.

HISE is part of HHS which focuses on five issues of vital importance: Family Safety & Security; Housing & Shelter; Science & Math Education; Habitat & Conservation; and Humanitarian Relief. Together with leading public and non-profit institutions, Honeywell has developed powerful programs to address these needs in the communities it serves.

Honeywell hosted the third annual Green Boot Camp, an interactive workshop focused on best practice instruction methods for teaching energy, sustainability, and environmental concepts. As part of the five-day event, 40 middle school teachers from across North America gathered to explore the roots of green technology, sustainable living, and environmental awareness by using the Union County Vocational-Technical Schools (UCTVS) campus in Scotch Plains, N.J., as a living laboratory.

“Our objective was to equip teachers with the tools to get students excited about science and engineering, and enable them to understand sustainable practices that will positively affect their families, schools, and communities,” said Paul Orzeske, president of Honeywell Building Solutions.

Green Boot Camp was created through an environmental partnership between UCVTS and Honeywell Hometown Solutions, the company’s corporate citizenship initiative.

Honeywell Chairman and CEO Dave Cote and Honeywell Hometown Solutions President Tom Buckmaster joined students, parents, teachers, school administrators, and community leaders to open Ecole Nationale Jacob Martin Henriquez, a new, state-of-the-art public school in the hard-hit city of Jacmel in southern Haiti. The nine-building school complex will provide a new educational home and free meals to more than 600 local children in grades K through seven.

The school was built using contemporary, sustainable building methods and is designed to withstand any potential future earthquakes. Honeywell used the school’s construction to train local builders in modern earthquake-resistant construction and environmentally-conscious techniques that can save Haiti money and natural resources in the years to come. Honeywell has established a scholarship fund in partnership with Operation USA to help cover the cost of books, uniforms, and other student expenses.

Immediately following the earthquake, Honeywell committed $1 million in aid to Haiti, including a 100 percent match of employee donations, to fund rebuilding projects. Honeywell also made business jets available to relief agency Operation USA for airlift support to deliver medical supplies and transport medical staff.
