Honeywell has introduced its most durable laminate film to date, designed to protect solar power panels from harsh environments while helping them maintain reliable power output over their 25-year lifespans. The product, PowerShield® 3W, is a cost-effective solar panel backsheet that helps protect the electrical circuits, preventing moisture from entering and keeping electrical charges within the module. These features help the module retain maximum power output while maintaining electrical safety.

The technology behind PowerShield 3W is based on Honeywell’s more than 30 years of experience as the world’s leading manufacturer of high-barrier films for food packaging, industrial and healthcare applications, including packaging that protects drugs sold by the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies. Honeywell has an active and global research and development program for photovoltaic backsheets, with laboratories in Morris Township, NJ, and Shanghai, China.

Honeywell has announced an upgrade to its HTF7000 turbofan engine that will simultaneously cut emissions and boost thrust without increasing engine size.

SABER2, the new variant of Honeywell’s singular annular combustor for emissions reduction (SABER) currently available for the HTF engine family, will reduce drag and weight through improved aerodynamics and re-engineered fuel nozzles and fuel scheduling systems. These changes will offer improved performance as well as significant reductions in nitrous oxide emissions, going beyond the 25 percent reduction already delivered through Honeywell’s existing SABER system. SABER2 is expected to be commercially available by late 2013.

Honeywell will showcase other aviation products at the European Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition (EBACE) from May 14-16 in Geneva, Switzerland. Products include: Ovation Select™ Cabin Management System, Primus Elite™ Flight Deck, Gulfstream PlaneView® Flight Deck,  and Dassault EASy II Flight Deck.

Honeywell’s new LYNX Touch 5100 self-contained security and home automation system is easy to use, fast to install and offers a broad breadth of communication options.  It is the first technology of its kind to offer Wi-Fi, as well as an alarm radio that can communicate via 4G network. It also fully integrates with Honeywell Total Connect remote services.  The LYNX Touch 5100 system includes an optional Android™ tablet with a preloaded application for control of the system within the user’s Wi-Fi coverage area. It also fully integrates with Z-Wave®-enabled thermostats, locks and lighting systems to create integrated home automation capabilities at an affordable price.

The LYNX 5100 launch follows the introduction of Honeywell’s Tuxedo Touch, an automation system designed for larger homes, earlier this year.  Tuxedo Touch has a 7", high-resolution graphic touch screen that can integrate a number of comfort, electronics, energy and security devices and it has a built-in web server for remote access.

Honeywell Turbo Technologies, the leading global developer of automotive turbochargers, received the 2012 Automotive News PACE™ Award for its High Temperature, Ball Bearing (HTBB) VNT™ Turbo. The award recognizes Honeywell’s success in providing an industry first technology package, which consumers are looking for as fuel economy and vehicle performance continue to be primary purchase considerations at the dealership.

Daimler AG was the launch customer for this technology and worked closely with Honeywell to apply the HTBB Turbo after deciding in 2006 to re-engineer its 3.0L V6 diesel engine to meet future emissions standards in the U.S. and Europe. Debuting on the Mercedes-Benz E350 and R350 models, the new engine improved power and torque by 18 percent and 22 percent, respectively, while fuel economy improved by up to 21 percent with the HTBB technology from the  previous engine. The engine/turbo was subsequently introduced in its S-Class sedan and will eventually roll out across its full product line.

Honeywell Turbo Technologies has announced that its latest gasoline turbocharging technology will be included on the all-new Fiat Viaggio. This news was distributed at the 2012 International Auto Show in Beijing.

Incorporating the latest advances in aerodynamics and bearing systems, Honeywell’s newest gasoline technology delivers significantly improved fuel economy and driving performance in a 30 percent smaller space, lowering the overall system complexity and cost.

“Our latest turbo technology provides customers with an effective and affordable solution to meet the new fuel economy standards around the world,” said David Paja, Honeywell Transportation Systems vice president and general manager, China and India. “Turbo sales in China are expected to double from 4 million to 8 million during the next five years.

The Viaggio is expected to become a strong competitor in the passenger vehicle small car segment in China with excellent fuel economy and superior performance. The turbocharged 1.4L T-Jet Fire engine is expected to produce 120 horsepower, which can be increased up to 150 hp in a sport tuned version, and also deliver 206 Nm of torque with a dual clutch transmission.

The Business Roundtable (BRT) has released its 2012 Sustainability Report – titled Create, Grow, Sustain – which highlights the efforts of America's CEOs to create a more sustainable future. In the report, Dave Cote, Honeywell Chairman and CEO and Energy Environment Committee Chair of the BRT, explains how Honeywell’s solutions and technologies expand sustainable capacity and improve the efficiency of products and processes to foster “Sustainable Opportunity”.

In an effort to help reduce energy consumption and environmental impact around the world, Honeywell is working with the Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI) as one of four energy services companies involved at the outset of CCI’s Energy Efficiency Building Retrofit Program. The company has already implemented projects to upgrade facilities and cut carbon emissions in London, Melbourne, Seoul, Hong Kong, and Puerto Rico.

The company’s dedication to protecting the environment with a comprehensive and contemporary commitment is one of the central tenets of how Honeywell does business. In 2007, Honeywell established five-year greenhouse gas and energy efficiency objectives for our internal operations. Honeywell met these goals, reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by more than 30 percent, and increasing our energy efficiency by more than 20 percent, both measured from a 2004 baseline year. Annual goals will continue to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase energy efficiency.

Honeywell announced that the company’s smart grid project with Custom Building Products won the “Energy Project of the Year” award from the Southern California Chapter of the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE). The Honeywell project provides Custom Building Products with precise control over how its Bell, Calif., manufacturing facility uses energy, enabling it to automatically respond to changing peak electricity prices and trim utility bills.

The award recognizes the project for its high level of substantiated savings, which will enable the work to pay for itself within an estimated five months. Custom Building Products, a manufacturer of supplies for the construction industry, offset the $80,000 total project cost with rebates from Southern California Edison (SCE) and support from a Smart Grid Investment Grant Honeywell received from the Department of Energy in late 2009. Those funds lowered the out-of-pocket expenses to less than $3,000. And Custom Building Products expects to realize $6,000 in annual energy savings due to the upgrades and the resulting enhanced control.

For the project, Custom Building Products enrolled its 142,000-square-foot building in an automated demand response program, managed by Honeywell, to control how facility equipment responds to SCE’s dynamic pricing structure. The structure bases electricity rates for commercial and industrial customers on consumption levels and generation costs, meaning prices rise significantly during periods of peak demand.

Honeywell Chairman and CEO Dave Cote was interviewed on CNBC’s Mad Money with host Jim Cramer to discuss the company’s strong first quarter 2012 financial results, highlighting a 7% increase in sales and an 18% increase in earnings per share versus the same quarter last year. 

Also, as part of CNBC’s and Mad Money’s Earth Week theme, Cote showcased some of Honeywell’s energy efficient solutions, including: a Honeywell turbocharger that can get 40 miles to a gallon of gas; Honeywell Green Jet Fuel made from inedible feedstocks that is powering military and commercial biofuel flights; Honeywell Total Connect system, which provides simple, integrated access to all of a user’s systems at home, helping to manage and reduce energy use; Honeywell’s Prestige thermostat, which helps homeowners save 33% on their home energy bill; and Honeywell’s 3D Weather Radar technology, which provides pilots improved safety and reduces flight delays to save fuel. 

“It’s got to be a good product, and got to accomplish a good end,” Cote said, referring to Honeywell’s approach to energy efficient technology.  “It’s got to be easy to use, and it has to make sense because if it doesn’t make economic sense, it’s not going to last.”

Honeywell’s Enovate zero-ozone depleting liquid blowing agent, which is used in spray foam roofing for superior long-term insulation performance and decreased energy consumption, was recently applied to protect the roofs of three Honeywell structures.

The product was used on the roofs of the administration building and the Larry Bossidy Learning Center at Honeywell’s corporate headquarters in Morristown, N.J. to eliminate leaks and repair wind damage. “We chose spray foam for several reasons: ease of installation, competitive cost, and the energy efficiencies that would be created,” said Phil Tortorelli, project manager for Jones Lang LaSalle at Honeywell’s Morristown headquarters.

Enovate was also used at Honeywell’s Hopewell, Va. site to repair the metal roof of a tank following wind damage sustained during Hurricane Irene.

Perhaps the largest spray foam roofing installation to date was the Enovate-formulated closed-cell polyurethane foam system used to repair the 9.7 acre roof of the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans after it was severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. Like other closed-cell polyurethane foam roof systems formulated with Enovate blowing agent, the new Superdome roof creates a watertight, monolithic barrier that adheres to the contour of the structure without penetrating fasteners and is guaranteed to resist hurricane force winds.

Honeywell has successfully reduced greenhouse gas emissions by more than 30% and increased energy efficiency by more than 20% compared to its 2004 benchmark year.  This effort was part of a five-year plan focused on internal operational improvements across the company.  Honeywell has also reduced its hazardous waste generated per dollar of revenue by more than 15% between 2007 and 2012.

Going forward, Honeywell will continue to establish annual goals for further greenhouse gas emissions reductions and energy efficiency enhancements and monitor its progress.  Additionally, Honeywell has developed a global inventory of water usage in its manufacturing operations and is developing conservation targets at sites in areas that are experiencing “water stress” as defined by the World Resources Institute. Implementation of conservation targets will begin in 2013.

Honeywell’s commitment to sustainability extends to its customers through the continued development of products that help customers address key challenges, including energy efficiency and clean energy generation.  Today, nearly 50 percent of Honeywell’s product portfolio is linked to energy efficiency. The United States could reduce its energy consumption 20 to 25 percent by immediately and comprehensively adopting existing Honeywell technologies.
